Satellite data shows Darnius reservoir at a very low level

28 February, 2023

The Darnius Boadella reservoir (Alt Empordà) is currently at just over 30% of its capacity, the lowest figure for at least the last five years and well below average for this time of year.

Satellite data make it possible to monitor the state of lakes, rivers and reservoirs to predict the availability of water in the coming months. In this case, water level data from the Sentinel-3 satellite shows the lowest level of the reservoir since the launch of the satellite in 2017. This situation is also evident in the images from Sentinel-2 L2A satellite, which show the evolution of the water-covered surface. In this case, the NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) filter has been applied to emphasize the delimitation of the reservoir surface.
